Terms of service

Last updated 2026-10-28

These terms cover your use of Plainmail. The short version: pay $5 a month, use it for your own mail, don't send spam, and keep your own copy of anything you can't afford to lose.

Who we are

Plainmail ("we", "us") provides the email hosting service at plainmail.dev. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to these terms and to our acceptable use policy and privacy policy.

The service

Plainmail hosts email for domains you own. You get mailboxes you can use in any IMAP/SMTP mail app, and tools (an MCP server, a CLI and an API) that set up the DNS records your domains need. Outgoing mail is sent through Amazon SES.

Plainmail is currently in private beta. Features may change, and we may limit who can sign up.

Your account

  • You sign in with GitHub. Keep that account and any API keys we give you secure; you're responsible for everything done with them, including by apps or agents you connect.
  • You may only add domains you own or control.
  • Give us a working email address so we can reach you about your account.

Price and billing

  • Plainmail costs $5 a month, billed monthly through Stripe. There is no free tier.
  • You can cancel at any time. Service continues until the end of the period you've paid for. We don't refund partial months.
  • If we change the price, we'll tell you by email at least 30 days before it applies to you.

Fair use

Each account includes up to 50 domains, 100 mailboxes, 25 GB of storage, and 200 outgoing messages per mailbox per day. If an account goes well beyond these limits, we'll contact you before taking any action, unless the use breaks our acceptable use policy.

What you can send

Plainmail is for personal and transactional mail between people. Bulk mail, marketing, newsletters, cold outreach and spam are not allowed. The acceptable use policy has the full list and explains how we enforce it.

Your content

Your mail belongs to you. We only store and process it to provide the service, as described in the privacy policy. You can take a copy at any time with any IMAP mail app.

Suspension and closing accounts

  • We may pause outgoing mail or suspend an account that breaks these terms or the acceptable use policy, or that puts other customers' mail delivery at risk.
  • You can close your account at any time. After your subscription ends, we delete your mailboxes and account data within 60 days, after warning you by email.

No guarantees

We work hard to keep Plainmail running and your mail delivered, but the service is provided "as is". We can't promise it will never be down or that every message will arrive. Keep your own copy of anything important.

Limit of liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, such as lost profits or lost data, and our total liability to you is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.

Changes to these terms

If we change these terms in a way that matters, we'll email you before the change takes effect. If you keep using Plainmail after that, the new terms apply.
